It’s a big blow for him, he’s just signed new contract, he was happy in his play, we were happy with his play.

Steve Cotterill says scans have confirmed that Jonathan Grounds has a bad medial ligament tear and he expects to be without the left-back for the remainder of the campaign.

Grounds sustained the injury in a block tackle during the 3-1 away win at Sheffield Wednesday, and Cotterill says the prognosis is a blow for the player and the team.

“I’m not sure he’ll play again this season," said Cotterill.

“It’s quite a bad medial tear.

"He had the scan yesterday and it showed it was worse than we'd hoped.

“As soon as you start opening up the medial ligament you’re in trouble. They're always very dangerous.

“So, I would be surprised if we see Jonathan again this season."

Asked how Grounds was taking the news, Cotterill said: “He’s a bit down at the moment.

“It’s a big blow for him, he’s just signed new contract, he was happy in his play, we were happy with his play.

“He was one of our most consistent performers.

“He’s a good lad and he’ll be missed, and we feel for him, but it will give someone else an opportunity.”

Meanwhile, ahead of Blue’ trip to Aston Villa on Sunday, there looks to be some positive news concerning winger Jacques Maghoma, who has not figured since the Sunderland game because of a groin injury.

“He might be okay," said Cotterill when asked for an update.

“We’ve got another day, but he might be okay."
