PREVIEW: Manchester City Women v Blues Women

We don’t do under dogs, but we’ve got to go there and perform really well to take some points.

Blues return to league action against Manchester City this Sunday (12.15pm), after a thrilling cup win over Leicester City.

In midweek, Blues defeated the Foxes with goals from Shania Hayles, Lucy Staniforth, Chloe Arthur, Charlie Wellings and Aoife Mannion in a 6-0 win at Farley Way Stadium and Marc Skinner’s side will be looking to take this form and confidence into the next game.

They face a Manchester City side who also produced a 6-0 score line as they beat Sheffield United Women in the Continental Cup, after beating Arsenal Women – the league leaders – last weekend.

Demi Stokes is back fit for Nick Cushing’s side, having been absent for the two fixtures between Blues and Manchester City this season.

They faced off on the opening day of the campaign in the Conti Cup, which ended with City beating Blues in a penalty shoo-tout after a tense 0-0 draw. While Cushing’s team took three points off the Blues in the league earlier this season at the Autotech Stadium, Solihull Moors, in an entertaining 3-2 loss.

Skinner is excited for the game but recognises the strength of the opposition, and how his side will have to be at their best to beat Man City.

He said: “They’re very good. We lost the last game against Man City and I wasn’t happy that we lost, but they’re a good squad that have just beaten the unbeatable team in the league.

“We don’t do under dogs, but we’ve got to go there and perform really well to take some points. And we want those points, because they took them off us last time. we’ve got to make sure every detail is right.

“Can we go to Man City and get a result? Yes we can.

“Man City are a top, top team and they’ve put themselves up there with a chance of winning the league as they should do.

“It’ll be exciting. That’s what we play for.”
