REACTION: Blues Women 2 Yeovil Town Ladies 1

I’ve said to the girls that I am happy with the three points, but the performances need to improve. I’m making sure that the girls focus on every single point, every single performance and it has to get better for the Leicester game.

Blues Women boss Marc Skinner was disappointed with his team’s performance despite picking up three points in a 2-1 victory over Yeovil Town Ladies.

His team found it difficult to break down the organised Yeovil back line in the first half, until Lucy Staniforth opening the scoring in the 50thminute.

Charlie Wellings then doubled the scoreline with a stunning strike from distance, but they couldn’t hold onto the clean sheet when Emily Syme notched in the final minutes.

Skinner said: “I was disappointed with the performance if I’m being honest. There were long periods of control in the game, but we allowed Yeovil into our heads a little bit.

“I’ve said to the girls that I am happy with the three points, but the performances need to improve. I’m making sure that the girls focus on every single point, every single performance and it has to get better for the Leicester game.

“Yeovil were organised, structured and hard to break down. They didn’t drop right off, we had to try to play through them, but we didn’t make good decisions in the final third. We’ve got to make sure we’re ruthless in there.

“We’ve rotated the squad today, and these girls need to be ready to come into the starting XI from the off. Some of them made an impact today and they’ve got to keep doing it. We’re a small squad and we rely on everyone.”

Wellings, scoring her second goal of the season, came on in the second half for goalscorer Staniforth. She instantly made an impact with an effort from 25-yards-out. The manager was impressed with the difference she made to his squad after coming on.

He said: “She’s ready. She’s been playing the last few games and she came off the bench and made an impact, a difference. The other players need to take a leaf out of Charlie’s book and do that too.

“I just want the girls to continue to focus and keep their eye on the prize. I will demand a lot, lot more from the team going into the next game because although we’ve won, our performance needs to improve. We need to take our chances.”

Blues face Leicester City Women in the Continental Cup on Wednesday and the boss will be looking for a reaction.

He said: “We will have to come into the game and set the tempo. Move the ball and move the opposition and try to be as deadly as possible in the box. When they perform like that it’s ruthless, but they’ve got to do it consistently. Not perfection, consistency. We’ve got to stay in the groove.”
