REACTION: Blues Women 3 West Ham Women 0

One’s a set-piece, one is a wonderful finish and the other is a team goal.

Marc Skinner

Blues Women produced a dominant display at home which manager Marc Skinner labelled as “controlled.”

The boss was impressed with his side after they scored three goals for the first time this season, thanks to Kerys Harrop, Emma Follis and Lucy Staniforth.

He said: “The performance was controlled. But Ann has had to make saves based on us giving away the ball rather than West Ham cutting us open. I was really pleased with the element of control that we had in the game. Our game plan worked.”

Skinner had previously said that his team were working on creating more chances in games and being able to convert them. With three goals against West Ham, his team achieved just that.

He said: “I thought that Lucy Staniforth should have had a couple more goals today which would have been a fairer reflection of the game, in my opinion. But I will commend the girls for scoring three different types of goals.

“Emma Follis’ finish is wonderful. One’s a set-piece, one is a wonderful finish and the other is a team goal. It’s gone well, and I’m pleased with all of their effort and commitment today.”

Having lost to Arsenal Women before the international break it was important for Blues to get back to winning ways.

Skinner said: “I thought it was really important to bounce back because I didn’t think we played poorly against Arsenal. I thought we were unfortunate not to take something from that game albeit we didn’t create enough.

“I thought that we controlled periods of that game but today we spoke about a fast start, getting on top and taking it to the opposition, seeing how many shots we could have, and they’ve tried to do that today. I want them to keep working for each other and doing it on the field.

“We now have 16 points after eight games, that’s not bad. So we’ll keep working and keep trying and taking each game as it comes.”

Next week, they face Liverpool away from home and the manager is aiming for consistency in his side.

He said: “Liverpool will be really tough, even though they lost yesterday. You can win one week, and you can lose the next week, but we’re trying to gain consistency. We have to go there and impose our game on the opposition and try and get the three points.”
