While Arsenal celebrated, Follis went over to her manager. Little did they know that she would instantly equalise.

Blues Women were on the end of a narrow 3-1 defeat to league leaders Arsenal Women.

A second half brace from Jordan Nobbs and Danielle van de Donk’s penalty secured all three points for Arsenal, despite Emma Follis’ dinked finish at Meadow Park.

Connie Scofield made her first start in the league coming in for the injured Marisa Ewers, while Harriet Scott returned to the starting line up in place of the suspended Hayley Ladd.

And it was Scofield that was pulling the strings in the middle of the park from the off. The midfielder played in Follis down the left. She raced towards goal, but the referee pulled the game back for a free-kick against the striker as she made her way into the box.

The same combination linked up again as Scofield won the ball on the left flank and slotted through Follis. The striker’s curling shot didn’t test Pauline Peyraud-Magnin though.

Blues enjoyed the possession and looked forward at every opportunity. This time, Chloe Arthur released Charlie Wellings but she was stopped by the thunderous block of Emma Mitchell, just as she was about to pull the trigger.

Wellings was always working off the shoulders of the Arsenal defence and was this time played in by a sweeping ball over the top from Meaghan Sargeant. Wellings took it down neatly but was thwarted by Mitchell, yet again.

Arsenal though worked their way back into the game and began to put pressure on the Blues. The golden chance though, fell to Nobbs. The England international drilled the ball and it took a brilliant save by Ann-Katrin Berger to push the effort around the post.

In the second half, Arsenal came out of the blocks the quickest. Efforts from Nobbs and Beth Mead tested Berger, who had to make two quality saves.

However, the defence was breached after 59 minutes when Nobbs fired a shot into the back of the net despite Aoife Mannion’s efforts to block it.

While Arsenal celebrated, Follis went over to her manager. Little did they know that she would instantly equalise. From the restart, Follis was given the ball and she raced down the right. She got to the by line and dinked a lovely shot over the top of Peyraud-Magnin.

Arsenal though responded through Danielle van de Donk’s penalty after the referee pointed to the spot when Mannion brought down Lisa Evans.
