The goalkeeper pulled off the save from the spot in the second-half to deny Chelsea and gave Blues a temporary lead at the top of the table.
There were two changes to the team that beat Bristol City last Sunday as Chloe Arthur and Sarah Mayling replaced Paige Williams and Harriet Scott in the starting XI.
Blues were looking to continue their excellent form in the league and record back-to-back victories to take them to the top of the league until Arsenal play their 2pm fixture.
However, they were rocked by the early injury to Marisa Ewers. The midfielder came off worse following a collision with a Chelsea player and was replaced by Scott.
Following the substitution, Blues saw their first sight on goal. Lucy Staniforth picked out Emma Follis with a sweeping ball over the top. Out on the wing, Follis played it into Arthur on the edge of the box, but her shot was wide of the post.
Chelsea threatened in and amongst the Blues possession and Berger had to be alert to the danger when Ji slotted a ball through the defensive line. It found Fran Kirby who hit it first time, but the goalkeeper was off her line to block the shot.
Bethany England hit the post and Erin Cuthbert had long-range efforts, but the two teams went into half-time with the honours even.
Blues started the second half the brighter, but they couldn’t carve out a chance to test Hedvig Lindhal.
Defensively Skinner’s side were solid. They put their bodies, feet, heads behind the ball and won every block that came their way.
But they came unstuck as the referee pointed to the spot when Kerys Harrop slid in on Ji. Karen Carney stepped up to the spot, picked the bottom right corner but Berger was equal to it to push it round the post.
The crowd went wild and the atmosphere cracked up a notch, but there was still to be a twist in the tale. Hayley Ladd was shown a red card after picking up two yellows.
