Blues Women fell to their first defeat of the season, with a 3-2 loss against Manchester City.

Despite going 2-0 up through an Abbie McManus own goal and Meaghan Sargeant header, they were pegged back by Caroline Weir and Nikita Parris’ efforts before Tessa Wullaert struck the winner.

As Blues looked to make it four wins out of four, there was one change made to the staring XI as Sarah Mayling replaced Charlie Wellings. Lucy Quinn also returned to the first team squad after missing the last three games.

Blues came out of the traps the quickest and they carved out the first real opportunity of the match. Marisa Ewers pressed high and pinched the ball in the middle of the park, before passing to Hayley Ladd. The Welsh midfielder then released Emma Follis, but her shot was too tame to trouble Ellie Roebuck.

Their pressure was rewarded when Lucy Staniforth bared down on McManus. The Man City defender turned with the ball and sent a lofted back pass from the halfway line towards her goalkeeper. It took a bounce and sailed over Roebuck’s head and into the goal.

The team ran off in celebration as they couldn’t quite believe what had happened, but overjoyed to be 1-0 up in the game.

McManus nearly made the same mistake after 18 minutes when her clearance had to be smartly saved by Roebuck. It then fell to Arthur who struck a curling effort round the post.

Just seconds later, Staniforth missed a chance to double the lead. Follis danced past defenders into the City box and picked out the midfielder, but Staniforth couldn’t get enough accuracy on the shot to beat Roebuck.

Ladd then took a cross down on her chest at the edge of the box and fired an effort goal wards, but it was just wide.

Four minutes into the second half, Blues finally doubled their advantage. Staniforth delivered a delicious cross into the box from the corner and Sargeant rised the highest. She headed it across goal and it went in off the post.

But the visitors got a goal back through Weir as her effort looped over Ann-Katrin Berger, despite the goalkeeper’s best efforts.

City equalised after 64 minutes when goal scorer Weir weaved her way through the box and laid it off to Parris who slotted it beyond Berger.

The opposition completed the turnaround Wullaert’s shot from 18-yards out takes an unlucky deflection which sends it flying into the top right corner.
