Goals from Shania Hayles, Lucy Staniforth, Chloe Arthur, Charlie Wellings and an Aoife Mannion penalty secured a comfortable result which keeps Blues in second place in Group One North, going into the last group stage fixture against Bristol City next week.
Hayles made her first start this season and after just three minutes scored her second goal for the club. Following Blues’ patient passing, Lucy Quinn ran through on goal. Her shot was well saved by Charlotte Clarke but Hayles pounced on the rebound to poke it home, her second goal in the Continental Cup.
Staniforth and Quinn ran the show in the middle of the park for the Blues and they linked up throughout the match to produce a number of chances. On this occasion, Staniforth played a lovely switched ball into the path of Quinn, who brought it down neatly only for the danger to be smothered by the goalkeeper.
It was Staniforth, however, who doubled the lead. She latched onto a spectacular ball over the top and rounded Clarke before netting from a tight angle.
Blues had the lion share of possession and extended their advantage with a breath-taking solo effort from Arthur – scoring her first ever goal for the club since signing in the summer. The midfielder was given the ball 30-yards-out, looked up and with no options ahead of her, rocketed an effort into the back of the net.
Six minutes later and Wellings got herself on the scoresheet. Quinn was once again involved as she split open the Leicester defence with a clinical through ball. Wellings picked it up and buried it beyond Clarke.
After the break, Blues picked up where they left off. Staniforth and Wellings had chances to double their personal tally, before Hayles doubled her own. A Blues corner caused confusion in the opposition box and it was Hayles who was quickest to react to tuck under the outstretched arm of the goalkeeper.
Quinn went on a run down the right and was brought down by a heavy tackle in the box. The referee pointed to the spot and Aoife Mannion cooly stepped up to the spot and buried it.
