Blues Women continued their perfect start to the FA WSL with a gritty 1-0 win over Reading.

It was a game of two halves as Blues dominated the first-half proceedings which was kicked off by a seven-minute strike by Meaghan Sargeant, that was enough to see past the Royals. But Kelly Chambers’ side could have snuck one in during the second half, but Blues held on for victory.

There was just the one change from Wednesday night’s victory over Brighton as Chloe Arthur replaced Sarah Mayling in the final game of the three-match week.

Marc Skinner’s side went into the fixture with confidence on the back of four wins in a row without conceding all season.

Blues started the brighter and just two minutes in, Lucy Staniforth drove into the box and tested Grace Moloney with a ferocious drive.

Their quick start was rewarded with a goal inside the opening seven minutes. Paige Williams whipped a delightful ball into the box and it was met by Sargeant, who made no question about the finish as she hit it into the ground to land perfectly beyond Moloney and nestle into the bottom left corner.

Staniforth was once again in the thick of the action and sent in a peach of a corner, which was met by Ladd, but she couldn't keep her header down.

Charlie Wellings then played a lovely dinked ball over the top and into Emma Follis. She only had the 'keeper to beat but her heavy touch let her down and the chance evaded her.

Blues were on top and they should have doubled their advantage when Wellings received the ball via a back heel from Staniforth and let fire from the half way line. However, it went straight into the hands of Moloney.

Ann-Katrin Berger had her first save of the match to make and it was a confident one at that. She denied Brooke Chaplen's shot with her legs to prevent Reading the equaliser. Sargeant then kicked it away for a corner.

The Blues goalkeeper was in the thick of the action in the second half and she pulled off a brilliant double save to keep out shots from Lauren Bruton and Chaplen.

Follis should have given Blues breathing space when she went through on goal one-on-one three times during the second half, but she just couldn’t find the back of the net.

Blues face Manchester City next Sunday in the early fixture at the Automated Technology Group Stadium.
