The German fourth-tier side took a first-half lead, before Jota levelled for the visitors with a well-taken effort just after the hour-mark.
ULM, who were well into their pre-season campaign, provided a more than decent test for Blues with their energy and technical ability.
Garry Monk elected to start with the same 10 outfield players that played the final half an hour in Thursday evening's friendly against Russian side Akhmat Grozny in Austria.
The hosts made the early running and fashioned the first opening after just four minutes when Adrian Beck fired narrowly over Connal Trueman's bar from the edge of the box
Both sides began to press forwards and Blues were not too far away after the ball was charged down by Jota before the Spaniard slid a low pass across the front of the goal, but nobody was on hand to meet it.
Midway through the half Jota was in action at the other end of the pitch when he cleared Nico Gutjahr's goalbound header from just inside his near post following a corner.
Unfortunately, he was unable to replicate that same move moments later when ULM took a 28th minute lead following another corner.
The initial deadball was cleared before being sent in a second time, where Gutjahr powered a header into the far corner of the net.
Blues were dealt a further blow just after the half-hour mark when Hutton limped off to be replaced by Dom Bernard.
Buoyed by their opener, ULM continued to threaten, but it was Blues that were not too far away after Jota's free-kick was met by Marc Roberts, but the Blues defender sidefooted his volley high and wide.
With the break approaching ULM were back on the offensive and Aron Viventi's rasping shot towards goal was deflected behind for a corner.
Half-time: SSV ULM 1 Blues 0
Blues boss Monk elected to make a further three changes at the break when he sent on Maikel Kieftenbeld, Beryly Lubala and Jacques Maghoma.
Blues were thankful to Trueman in preventing a certain goal on 50 minutes when the stopper produced a wonderful diving save to tip Thomas Rathgeber's header around the post.
It was all change again for Blues on 55 with Harlee Dean, Craig Gardner, Michael Morrison and Lukas Jutkiewicz entering the fray for Blues.
Blues were finally back in the match after 61 minutes courtesy of Jota.
Lubala won the ball in midfield before launching a pass deep into the ULM half whicj Jota ran onto.
He looked to have taken it too far when the goalkeeper forced him wide, but he did well to cut inside and drill a low shot inside the bottom of the near post.
Almost immediately Blues' final three outfield subs - Viv Solomon-Otabor, Wes Harding and Josh Dacres-Cogley - were given the chance to get minutes out on the pitch.
ULM spurned an excellent opportunity to regain their advantage when a dangerous free-kick was sent in, but with the goal at his mercy Rathgeber completely miscued his attempt and it was comfortably held by Trueman.
Trueman then produced another comfortable to save Kai Luibrand's headed attempt.
Blues counter-attacked and Jutkiewicz crossed a neat ball to the far post, but instead of using his head - which may have been more effective, Solomon-Otabor looped a soft volley into the goalkeeper's arms.
Jutkiewicz was not far away himself when his shot evaded the goalkeeper, but Lennart Stoll was in the right place to clear off the line.
