A Proper Blues Love Story

Happy Valentine’s Day Stephen and Barbara!

Garry Monk made it a Valentine’s Day to remember for Bluenose couple Stephen and Barbara Walton.

Stephen and Barbara met through their mutual love for Blues at an away day in 1958 at Ewood Park after Stephen ran onto the pitch following a dare from his friends!

“It was 1958 and Barbara was in the supporters club with her younger brother. Me and my mates decided to go to the Blackburn away game,” reveals Stephen.

“My mates dared me to run on the pitch with a banner and I did! I had to be pretty quick. I put the banner in the middle of the pitch and put my arms up (in the air). I then pulled it back out of the ground and ran as fast as I could to get back behind the goal.

“I jumped in the crowd and jumped on top of her! I thought to myself that’s for me and three weeks later we were courting. We’ve been stuck ever since.”

They have been stuck together for over 60 years, enjoying some fantastic times. None more so than receiving an invitation from Garry Monk to meet him and enjoy a romantic meal in the Legends Lounge before the Bolton game earlier this week.

Stephen and Barbara retold the Blues boss how they met all those years ago in the 1950s, with Garry describing the moment as ‘that’s proper Blues’.

Unfortunately, Blues lost 3-2 to Blackburn in 1958 with Eddy Brown and Bunny Larkin getting on the score sheet in the First Division clash.

Happy Valentine’s Day Stephen and Barbara!
