Harlee Dean has been named Blues new Captain.

The centre-half was the standout choice of Pep Clotet.

Dean, 28 today, takes on the mantle following the departure of Michael Morrison this summer.

“I think Harlee is a player who showed last season a lot of commitment to the team, to the Club," commented Clotet.

“He showed a lot of commitment to the team as well to be on the front foot, to be a brave player too, for the spirit.

“Those are the values that are very important. And they are very important values into a club like us that has a mentality of working hard and always trying to do your best and trying to be positive.

“I saw all of that in Harlee and it is a decision that I really reflected upon, I assessed all the pros and cons.

"Harlee has showed to me a lot of confidence in the team, a lot of confidence in the Club and when it comes to being a pro, taking the best out of everyone.

“He is a good character and very well respected within the group.

"He takes his profession very seriously and, as well, as we want to keep working on the values of hard work, companionship and always putting the team in front of yourself, he has all the support of the players around him to help us do that and implement our vision going forward.

“I wish him good luck and I am sure he will do very well and make all of us proud as Captain of Birmingham City.”

Dean was on course to be an ever-present for Blues last season but once Championship status was secured, was booked for a hernia operation.

It meant he missed the last two fixtures but was fit for this pre-season.

He bravely played through the issue for a large chunk of the last campaign, swapping sides in the heart of the defence with Morrison to try and help ease the pain.

Dean joined Blues two summers ago from Brentford, a side he also skippered.

He has made 82 appearances in the royal blue and scored two goals.

Dean, David Davis, Marc Roberts and Craig Gardner have all taken the skipper's armband at various stages this pre-season.
