Pep Clotet is convinced that Craig Gardner's experience as a player combined with his affinity for Blues makes him a perfect fit for the role of First Team Coach.

The 33-year-old midfielder had been combining the role of player and coach, but announced earlier this week that he was hanging up his playing boots for good at the end of the current campaign.

However, such is the impression that he has made out on the training pitches, Gardner was asked to join the backroom staff on a full-time basis at the end of the season.

"The most important thing for me is that he has the best interest of the Club at heart and has very good knowledge of the game and a lot of experience as a player," said Clotet

"He loves this Club and he wants this Club to do well.

"If he's so happy to make this step in his career it's because he's seen that this club is going in the direction that he wants it to be and that’s another important point for us.

"We welcome his work with us. He's already a big addition to the staff and I'm sure it will be even better."

"Craig is someone that has helped massively with giving us his own insight and experience as a player," continued Clotet.

"He has experience from the point of view of seeing the game and understanding the tactical side of the game when he was playing.

"In his midfield role he always valued good football and that is something that we are chasing.

"He understands the small tactical relationships with different positions. He's taking a lot of responsibility as well with the technical work with the players when it comes to improving them on the crossing, passing and finishing.

"I think he's doing very well with that on the training pitch but obviously, but it takes a lot of time to develop.”
