Preview: Blues v Sheffield United

Our full match preview ahead of tonight's Sky Bet Championship fixture against the Blades at the St. Andrew's Trillion Trophy Stadium (7.45pm kick-off).

Blues defender Maxime Colin's comments ahead of the game...
"We've never lost confidence in ourselves despite the recent bad run that we had. But we now have a really tough game on Wednesday against a Sheffield United side who are one of the best teams in the league. It will be another big challenge, but we want to achieve safety as quickly as possible and we we want to try and get something from the game."

Sheffield United captain Billy Sharp's comments ahead of the game...
"We've got to finish a busy week off with two more results, we've started it well with a win at Preston, but we've got a tough game on Wednesday against a team fighting to stay up. We are at one end fighting for something, they are at the other fighting for something else, it is going to be a tough match, but we are more than capable of getting a result. The points deduction has dragged them down, but we know they are a good team and they showed that at the weekend."

Blues team news...
Midfielder Maikel Kieftenbeld faces between six and nine months on the sidelines after damaging his knee ligaments during last weekend's win against Leeds United. Garry Monk will hope to have midfielder Gary Gardner back following a bout of illness which saw him brought off at half-time during the Leeds game.

Sheffield United team news...
Defender Jack O'Connell could return after missing Saturdays away win at Preston. Forward Gary Madine is available after missing the Blades' last three games because of suspension. Former Blues midfielder Mark Duffy is likely to start after overcoming an Achilles problem.

Important supporter message...
In light of recent events, the Club is urging all supporters to be responsible in their behaviour and actions. Birmingham City knows that the overwhelming majority of our supporters do not indulge in anti-social activities and are passionate about the players and the Club. We appreciate this and never take it for granted. The scrutiny of the football world, the wider public and the authorities is on us and we urge everyone to rally together to project the correct and positive image of the Club. We adopt a zero-tolerance stance on anti-social behaviour and spectator misconduct. This includes - amongst other things - drunkenness, throwing of missiles and use and carrying of pyrotechnics (flares, smoke bombs), racist and/or homophobic chanting. Pitch encroachment is forbidden and against the law. Please DO NOT encroach onto the pitch, under any circumstances. Think of the damage you may be doing to your Club and also the punishment you may incur personally. We are sure everyone is aware that the Football Association have powers to take serious action against the Club, which can include heavy fines and ground closure. The Club, as did others, recently received a written warning from the FA about missiles being thrown onto the pitch, at home and away games. As a result, neither bottles or containers are allowed at the St. Andrew's Trillion Trophy Stadium and drinks are decanted into paper cups. It is important that bottles, coins, flares and other items not thrown at our matches. Again, we would like to thank the overwhelming majority of supporters for their backing and their understanding at this time. We continually review all our stewarding, safety and security measures and we remain committed to making your experience following Blues a safe one and as pleasant as possible - but we also need YOUR help.
Thank you.

Match officials…
Darren Bond will take charge of tonight's game. So far this season, the Lancashire-based official has refereed 31 games where he has produced a total of 94 yellow cards and five reds. The last Blues game he refereed was our Championship away fixture at QPR in February. Blues won that match 4-3 and there were two players cautioned; including Jacques Maghoma for the visitors. During his refereeing career to date, Mr Bond has taken charge of 14 Blues matches - eight of which Blues have won, three they have drawn and two they have lost. The last Sheffield United game he took charge of was their Sky Bet Championship home fixture against Norwich City in August 2018 which the Blades won 2-1. Four players were booked in that game; including Chris Basham and David McGoldrick for the hosts. In total, Mr Dean has taken charge of 10 Sheffield United games; with the Blades winning five of them, drawing one and losing four. Mr Bond will be assisted on Wednesday by Adrian Waters and Matthew McGrath, with Andy Woolmer acting as the fourth official.
