Preview: QPR v Blues

Loftus Road hasn’t been the kindest to us in the past but it’s all about looking forwards and what these 90 minutes can mean to us.

Garry Monk

Our full match preview ahead of Saturday's Sky Bet Championship fixture against the R’s at Loftus Road (3pm kick-off).

Garry Monk's reflection's on Blues' win against Nottingham Forest last time out...
"We set out to do exactly what we did. I thought it was a fantastic performance from start to finish against a quality team, which Forest are. We were the underdog who wanted to prove a point and I think we did that. It was another confidence boost for the players to deliver that type of performance when it’s most needed. I’ve said it all along, when we’re at our 100 per cent or close with our intensity, we’ve shown already how we can overcome teams. And I think that was a good example of that against Nottingham Forest."

Garry Monk asked if Lukas Jutkiewicz was getting concerned about not scoring for a while...
"The main part is the team performance and he has contributed a huge amount this season - and he’s still contributing now. I get that strikers will always think about goals, but I have always made the most important thing the work they do for the team because that’s what allows the team to get in positions to win games. Jukey typifies that work that we need him to do. All strikers go on runs then they have periods when they don’t score. But the most important thing when they are not scoring is, they are contributing to the performance - and Jukey has done that, I can’t remember a game when he hasn’t. That’s testament to how well he has done this season."

Garry Monk on how pivotal the month ahead is in terms of playing several teams around Blues in the table...
"I am excited by it.I think we are in a position probably no-one expected at the start of the season. That’s why there’s the fans’ enthusiasm for where we are, and I think that enthusiasm rubs off on the players as well. What we are trying to do is fight every single game, we won’t change our approach, we haven’t set specific targets. The next 90 minutes is the most important, but they are all important in this period, we are just going with the attitude of trying to be at our maximum and putting a run of results together. We know we are capable of that but everyone there is fighting for something and that’ll be the same from now until the end of the season and they will all be really hard games."

Garry Monk's memories of the 0-0 draw between Blues and QPR earlier in the season and how the R's have progressed as a side under Steve McClaren...
"A scrappy and tight game. I think they were coming off the back of a difficult start to the season. They made it really difficult for us at home and ended up with a draw. It wasn’t the greatest game from what I can remember. But both teams have progressed from that point and I think Steve has done a fantastic job down there. They’re very similar to us in terms of the ratios of wins and how it’s kind of gone in the league with us being close to each other. Offensively they’ve got some really good players - the likes of Wells and Hamed that’s back now, Freeman and Eze and Wszolek. I think they’ve got a really good offensive outfit, so I’d always expect them to come back with that quality they have in the squad and they’ve done exceptionally well. It’s a tough game. Loftus Road hasn’t been the kindest to us in the past but it’s all about looking forwards and what these 90 minutes can mean to us. What we’re trying to do is put a run a run together, that’s our motivation."

Referee Darren Bond will take charge of Saturday's game. So far this season, the Lancashire-based official has refereed 24 games where he has produced a total of 73 yellow cards and four reds. The last Blues game he refereed was our Championship home game against Stoke City in December 2018. Blues won that match 2-0 and there were six players booked; including Harlee Dean and Gary Gardner for the hosts. The last QPR game he took charge of was their 1-0 home league defeat to Norwich City in September 2018. Two Norwich players were cautioned in that game, but no Rs players. Mr Bond will be assisted at Loftus Road by Ian Cooper and Michael George, with Keith Stroud acting as the fourth official.
