Reaction: Brentford 0 Blues 1

After we scored the goal, we had a lot of confidence and we started to play how we know we can play, the team managed to get the result and that is testament to them.

Pep Clotet spoke to the media after today's opening day victory at Griffin Park...

Pep Clotet on the win...

"Mixed feelings because we wanted to improve on certain parts of the game. We're not happy about them. But we know Brentford are strong at home. Last season you take away Norwich and Sheffield United, teams that were promoted, no other took more points at home.We knew how difficult it would be. First 25 minutes they started very well, we were a little bit nervous and couldn't impose ourselves. After that, we felt a little bit better and after the goal we knew how to manage the game, the result, despite not controlling the possession. It was a very tense ninety minutes. A huge credit has to go to the players for that performance, they put in that effort that we have all seen last season, as a working class club, that's what we want from our players, we want them to work hard. We didn't manage to impose ourselves early on, we got ahead, but we conceded a few chances that luckily for us didn't go in. After we scored the goal, we had a lot of confidence and we started to play how we know we can play, the team managed to get the result and that is testament to them, the fans know how hard it is to come away to Brentford and win, so it just shows what a great job we did. We maybe didn't control the ball or possession, but we controlled the spaces and gaps and we tried to play on Brentford's mistakes and force them into mistakes, to use them to our advantage and break on them."

Pep Clotet on adapting to the new style...

"We need to make sure we compete, add little things and slowly, gradually over time it will get stronger and stronger, the players know what we want from them. We played against a team who have been playing like that for a number of years, the whole composition of their squad. I am very happy, the players understood the game. Jacques Maghoma and Dan Crowley (who were behind Lukas Jutkiewicz) helped us to block all the gaps in which Brentford wanted to play. They wanted to use those gaps to get Canos on the ball, get Watkins on the ball, on the half-turn, and we needed to close that.  Despite our vision, despite what we want to do eventually, at the same time I'm happy with the players as they understood the game, they did the right things. We want to add those things that will help us challenge possession, like Brentford. But it doesn't happen straight away. We want to take each game step by step, we had a back three, but then it switched to a back five which gave us a solid shape at the back and in the end, the result came. The players are working very hard in training, they are understanding the vision, it makes me proud as a coach."

Pep Clotet on Blues' first opening day away win in 20 years...

"We are very proud of it, it just goes to show how hard it is to win away from home in this league, first away game of the season against a side like Brentford was always going to be tough, they have been doing well in recent seasons, there are a lot of things that we need to improve,, we were a bit lucky, but I am really happy with today's performance and result. We maybe didn't control possession, but we controlled the game and the spaces. We forced a game on Brentford that they weren't comfortable with. Massive credit to the lads."

Pep Clotet on bringing in new additions...

"The Club is working very hard behind the scenes to get the right type of player in, a player that has the talent but also has the right profile, character and personality to fit in  with this group. We are working hard, as is every Club. We want to bring players who will help us to be more of a contender when it comes to controlling the games. At the end of the day, as a coach you try to get the best out of the players you have. I am confident all the work is being done, and we will see."
