REACTION: Chelsea Women 2 Blues Women 3

I came here less than a week ago, but also to make it more difficult the players were on an international break, so the team was only together since Thursday. But it’s not only about me, it’s about the team, staff and all of the players together, they did a big job and I couldn’t have done it without them.

Marta Tejedor

Marta Tejedor began her Birmingham City Women’s helm with a dramatic 3-2 win over defending FA WSL champions Chelsea Women.

The Spaniard replaced the departed Marc Skinner in the manager’s hot seat and got off to the perfect start with a win at Kingsmeadow. She believed that the team had impressed her with their ability to bounce back, after going behind to Erin Cuthbert’s early goal.

She said: “I think that we the whole team and the staff did pretty well during the week preparing for the match and we came here to London with a very clear idea of what we had to do today.

“The preparation for the match was pretty good and then on the field the team did what we were expecting them to do. Chelsea are a big team, they had their own chances and we were lucky that we scored one goal more than them.

“In every game no matter what happens you have some chances and I think the performance was good because the team executed a plan.

Having only arrived on Monday, the new manager didn’t have that much time to implement her own style of play with players away on international duty. However, with the help of the existing coaching staff and character of the players, Blues left with all three points.

She said: “I came here less than a week ago, but also to make it more difficult the players were on an international break, so the team was only together since Thursday. But it’s not only about me, it’s about the team, staff and all of the players together, they did a big job and I couldn’t have done it without them.

Despite victory, Tejedor was still critical of her team’s performance and said that there is more to come from her new side.

She said: “I think they played pretty well but I keep thinking that we have to improve a lot, in a lot of different things, so they did well but we will be better.

“I have defined some key points that I think they don’t do as well that the team need to improve on. Also, there are some things that it’s not that they’re not doing well but it’s different approaches and I want to change some things, so I have a big, big amount of ideas in my head that I have to prioritise and go step by step.

“I think the potential of this team is much better and higher than what was on display today. We have seen today a lot of intensity on the field, good competitive ability but there is a lot of technical, tactical and physical areas to improve on.
