A stoppage time winner ended Birmingham City Women’s hopes of a Continental Cup semi-final place, as they fell to a 2-1 defeat to Arsenal.

Lucy Quinn gave Blues the lead at the start of the second half with a dinked finish, but they couldn’t hold off Arsenal’s comeback as goals from Danielle van de Donk and Vivianne Miedema crushed all dreams.

Blues were looking for a place in the semi-finals against the current holders of the Conti Cup. They made just one change from the victory over Reading, as goal scorer Meaghan Sargeant replaced Paige Williams.

The first chance of the game fell to Lucy Staniforth who found space 25-yards out. However, her shot sailed over the bar.

Blues had the majority of possession in the first half but couldn’t make it count. Charlie Wellings made a great run down the right and squared it to the onrushing Chloe Arthur. But the Scot’s shot was deflected over.

In the 18thminute, Skinner’s side was awarded a penalty. Quinn twisted and turned her way into the box before being brought down by the trailing defender’s leg. Blues, though, couldn’t capitalise. Aoife Mannion stepped up and sent a powerful drive into the bottom left corner. Sari van Veenendaal was equal to it, pushing it round the post.

In what was a much more even contest in the second half, Vivianne Miedema had an early effort for the Gunners. Her bullet effort from the edge of the box was just whiskers wide of the post, as Hannah Hampton watched it roll beyond her.

But it was Blues who took the lead in the 61stminute. They capitalised on slopping passing from Arsenal and played it out to Staniforth. The England international played an incisive ball through to split the Gunners defence and found Quinn in the box, who lifted it over the onrushing van Veenendaal and into the back of the net.

Arsenal found their way back into the match and drew themselves level with six minutes to go. Katie McCabe’s cross was converted by van de Donk.

They turned the tie around when Miedema took the ball past Hampton, who had come to close down the angle, and slotted into the net.
