Marta Tejedor, experiencing her first taste of home action here at St. Andrew’s, made four changes to the side who beat West Ham Women last time out.
Most notably, Kerys Harrop was missing from the starting line-up with Aoife Mannion, named in the PFA FA WSL Team of the Year, taking hold of the captain’s armband.
The first opportunity of the match fell to Blues in front of the encouraging home fans, as Claudia Walker played it into Ellen White. The England interntional’s shot was harried down by Liverpool’s defence in a promising start for Tejedor’s side.
Moments later, Blues should have been ahead. Meaghan Sargeant teed up Charlie Wellings, who fired from the edge of the 18-yard box. Her shot was deflected goal wards, and bravely toe poked off the line by Laura Coombs.
On 20 minutes, the home side turned their early pressure into advantage. Wellings was central to the action, this time firing against the post. But it was goal poacher White who was on the end of it, opening the scoring for the hosts.
White doubled her personal tally, while giving Blues a 2-0 lead. After some excellent build up play in the middle of the park, Chloe Arthur lifted the ball over the top of the high line of Liverpool’s back four. Meeting it with her head was White, who nodded in her second of the afternoon and sixth of the season.
During the second half, Walker was prevalent down the right with Wellings continuing to test up front.
Liverpool began to grow into the game following the interval, as Courtney Sweetman-Kirk went closest after good work down the wing by Rinsola Babjide before Christie Murray went inches wide. The Scot’s shot scrapping the post.
Yet Blues were resilient in defence, keeping their first clean sheet in eight league matches, to ensure all three points. The victory takes the Blues above Chelsea and into third.
