REPORT: Blues Women 2 Reading Women 1

It sparked jubilant celebrations with the fans and players as they enjoyed their late, late winner.

Meaghan Sargeant’s late header ensured Birmingham City were victorious against Reading, in a dramatic 2-1 win.

The substitute made an instant impact having replaced Paige Williams in the second half, as her goal was the decisive one at the final whistle.

Captain Kerys Harrop had given Blues the lead in the 71st minute after a goalless first half. Remi Allen equalised before Sargeant handed Blues all three points with a winning header.

Marisa Ewers returned from injury to take a place on the bench, while former Royals Harriet Scott and Emma Follis lined up against old team-mates.

It was the same of the opposite side of the field as Remi Allen, Jo Potter and Jade Moore all returned to Solihull Moors to match up against their former side.

There was a fiery atmosphere from the off as friends became enemies. Aoife Mannion set the tone with an excellent last-ditch tackle to stop the advancing Lauren Bruton who attempting to go one-on-one with goalkeeper Hannah Hampton.

Blues’ best chance of the half fell to Charlie Wellings from long-range. The striker teed herself up before firing at Grace Maloney, who saved comfortably.

42 seconds into the second-half, Blues had the perfect chance to take the lead. The ball fell to Paige Williams on the edge of the box. The full-back pulled the trigger and the powerful effort was saved by Maloney. The rebound found Lucy Quinn, who had two chances to put it into the back of the net. Her first effort was blocked, before she put it over the bar.

Moments later, Wellings had another opportunity from distance which had to be pushed around the post by the ‘keeper before Quinn saw her header from a corner fly past the post.

Blues finally broke the deadlock, after a dominant second half, in the 71st minute. Emma Follis was found in space on the right and tricked her way past Mayumi Pacheco to get a cross into the box. It found captain Harrop who had stormed her way into the box. Her arrowed header fired into the back of the net.

Reading found a way back when a late free-kick was turned in by Allen. The midfielder tucked it past Hampton to equalise for the Royals.

However, a minute later Blues were back in front. Lucy Staniforth swung in a delicious looking free-kick which was headed in past the stretching Maloney to give Blues all three points in the final two minutes. It sparked jubilant celebrations with the fans and players as they enjoyed their late, late winner.

There was five minutes added on at the end, but Blues held firm despite a late chance that Hampton saved superbly.
