To lose it is disappointing.Aitor Karanka
Karanka’s men had led the game until the final 13 minutes when goals from Harry Wilson and Sean Morrison turned the tide in the host's favour.
Blues themselves had worked hard to cancel out Robert Glatzel’s opener through Marc Roberts and then took the lead courtesy of Ivan Sanchez’s wondergoal.
But Karanka was not in the mood for hard-luck stories, with this being the second time in five days that Blues have squandered points in the closing stages of a Sky Bet Championship outing.
Speaking to the press post-match, his frustration was a reflection of the high standards that the Head Coach has set since his arrival in the close season.
He said: “I think we should have been better. Especially the first 20 minutes, we didn’t approach the game the way that we should. When you don’t start a game well it takes time, but when we did have the game under control it’s two or three individual mistakes that cost us the game. When we are playing away and you have the game under control, to lose it is disappointing.”
Although it might not feel it right now, Sanchez’s first goal in blue was an undoubted highlight from the evening. And Karanka was keen to reflect on this in a positive yet constructive manner.
He told the media via Zoom: “The only thing he [Ivan Sanchez] was missing was to score a goal – especially a goal like he scored today. I think he has been brilliant since he arrived. Unfortunately, it wasn’t good for us. We have to keep going and think about the game on Saturday.”
Fortunately, as the 47-year-old referenced, Blues are swiftly back in action when they welcome Middlesbrough to St. Andrew’s Trillion Trophy Stadium on Saturday afternoon, with Karanka hoping the players can channel tonight’s frustration into the visit of his former club.
“We have been working really well, with three good games in the last week and three individual mistakes in the last 95 minutes have cost us two games. It is something to be frustrated about, but the good thing about this league is that we have another game on Saturday.”
