Blues Women progressed to the fifth round of the Vitality Women’s FA Cup with an emphatic 5-1 victory over Coventry United.

Doubles from Claudia Walker and Sarah Mayling, alongside a header from Emily Murphy gave the home side the win.

Georgia Stevens scored a late consolation for the visitors.

Team News:

Carla Ward handed out two debuts to Sophie Whitehouse and Veatriki Sarri in place of Hannah Hamptonn and Ruesha Littlejohn, the latter missing through suspension. There was also a place on the bench for Heidi Logan who would come on to make her debut after a long-term injury.

Main Event:

Blues started brightly and went ahead after three minutes. Christie Murray’s effort from outside the area was only parried by the visiting 'keeper and Walker reacted quickest to prod home her first of the afternoon.

Walker almost had her and Blues’ second midway through the half. She charged towards goal but her low effort was well saved by Olivia Clark.

The home side were in the ascendancy and created another opportunity through debutant Sarri. A corner was worked back out to the Greek international, but her effort came crashing down off the underside of the bar.

Striker Walker again had a chance to double the lead. Jamie-Lee Napier played the ball over the top of the defence but Walker’s side-footed effort whistled wide.

Blues had a quieter start to the second-half, but eventually got their second of the afternoon. Rebecca Holloway played a delightful cross in and Murphy climbed highest to place her downward header into the far corner.

Ten minutes later and Blues had a third. Walker used her power and strength to nudge the defender off the ball and rolled an effort low into the bottom corner.

Walker played a ball over the top to Murphy, who skilfully got away from her marker to find Mayling to tap home.

The game became frantic in the final minutes. First, Coventry scored a consolation through Stevens. Warner played her in down the left and she cut back onto her right and bent a shot into the far corner.

Then, Mayling helped herself to her second of the afternoon. Murray rolled the ball to the midfielder, who powered an effort low into the bottom corner.
