Blues Women lost to Charlton Athletic in the Barclays Women's Championship on Sunday afternoon.

Ella Rutherford and Angela Addison set the Addicks on their way before a second-half own goal from Lucy Thomas rounded off a disappointing afternoon for Blues.

Charlie Devlin and Libby Smith had the visitors' best opportunities, but failed to find the back of the net with their two efforts.

TEAM NEWS:

Darren Carter made two changes to the side that beat Sunderland prior to the international break. Mollie Green and Charlie Estcourt came in for Martha Harris and Tara Bourne. Gemma Lawley made her return to the bench after missing the opening two games through injury.

MAIN EVENT:

Blues almost got off to the best start. A ball was rolled through to Charlie Devlin, who took a touch before firing towards goal, but Sian Rogers got down well to deny her.

Moments later, it was the hosts that took the lead. Emma Follis rolled the ball back to Rutherford, who placed a left-footed effort into the bottom corner.

Libby Smith worked an opening on the right, but her shot from an angle was comfortably saved by the ‘keeper.

Mollie Green then received the ball around 25-yards-out and struck towards goal, but Rogers was again equal to it and parried it away.

Charlton doubled their advantage in the closing stages of the first-half. Emily Simpkins’ corner wasn’t dealt with and Addison reacted quickest to prod in.

Libby Smith was a threat in the opening 45 minutes.

A positive note for Blues was the league debut of young striker Delphi Cole, who came on for the final 15 minutes after progressing through the RTC and Academy and impressing with the First Team of the last six months.
