Report: Manchester City 6-0 Blues Women

Blues Women fell to a defeat against Manchester City on Wednesday night in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.

After more than holding their own for the opening 60 minutes, but three goals in six minutes from Lauren Hemp and a Georgia Stanway brace put City in control.

Goals from Alanna Kennedy, Chloe Kelly and Laura Coombs rounded off the scoring and consigned Blues to FA Women’s Championship football next season.

Darren Carter made one change to the side that narrowly lost to Chelsea on Sunday. Libby Smith came into the front line in place of Lucy Quinn. Cecilie Sandvej returned to the matchday squad following a return from injury.

In the opening stages, Caroline Weir’s corner found the head of Lucy Bronze. Her goal bound header was cleared off the line by Christie Murray to keep the scores level.

Georgia Stanway then got in down the right but, under pressure from Louise Quinn, Bunny Shaw was unable to find a strong connection and Emily Ramsey saved comfortably.

Then, Bronze and Weir again combined with the latter heading the ball down the right-back, but her low drive skimmed off the far post.

Seconds before the half-time whistle, Gareth Taylor’s side were inches away from taking the lead. Lauren Hemp got in down the left and charged towards goal. Her shot came back off the post to keep the game goalless.

Emily Ramsey made a number of important saves to keep the score level.

Half-time: Manchester City 0-0 Blues Women

Blues were defensively strong in the opening exchanges of the second 45, Quinn timed a challenge perfectly to keep out Shaw and Stanway drilled a shot wide.

It was the England midfielder who gave the hosts the lead. Receiving the ball from Keira Walsh, Stanway fired low and into the bottom corner from range.

Minutes later, substitute Chloe Kelly crossed to the back post where Hemp was waiting to cushion the ball under Ramsey to double the lead.

After the Blues keeper had initially denied Stanway her second, the midfielder was on hand to fire in the rebound. Aussie centre-back Alanna Kennedy then got up well to head in City’s fourth from a corner.

Hemp then turned provider for Kelly. Her pass across the face of goal found the winger, who hammered home to make it five.

City rounded off the scoring through Laura Coombs. A corner was only half cleared and the midfielder’s strike from the edge of the area found the bottom corner.

Blues showed fighting spirt until the very end.

It was Man City’s opening goal that had undone all of Blues’ hard work, and the hosts did not look back from that point.
