Reaction: Leicester City 2-0 Blues Women

Darren Carter knows his team will return with plenty of fight after a defeat against Leicester City on Sunday afternoon.

A goal in either half from Sophie Howard and Sam Tierney consigned Blues to a defeat in their final fixture of 2021.

The result leaves Carter’s side at the foot of the Barclays FA Women’s Super League table with the hosts moving up a place after Sunday’s win.

Speaking to the media after defeat at the King Power Stadium, Carter was disappointed with the manner of his side’s loss to the Foxes.

He told reporters: “We haven’t imposed ourselves on the game in the way that we know we can. I thought started well, and then the injury to Louise Quinn killed our momentum slightly.

“You could sense that they were getting a bit of ascendancy in the game. At half-time we told them that we needed to be more aggressive in our press. I thought we did that better in the second half.

“Our quality at times let us down, and then we conceded from a set-piece. I’m thinking ‘have we tested the goalkeeper enough?’ and I don’t think we have. All in all, disappointed because I don’t think we’ve reached our capacity.”

Reflecting on the defeat, Carter reiterated that his side will be working hard to express their quality in the New Year.

He said: “I’m mindful that it has been a tough season for the players, and we have come in and tried to rewire the mindset and it is going to take a little bit of time.

“It’s a confidence thing, they just need to realise that they are good players and then they have to go and showcase that. We’ve got work to do, and we will go into the second-half of the season and give it everything we have got to lift them and help them reach their potential.”

Blues now have a three week break before their next fixture, and the Gaffer wants his players to use this time to reflect and come back reenergised ahead of the second-half of the campaign.

He said: “This break provides the players with a chance to reflect. As a full group, we’ve had just under three weeks together, we’ve given them a lot of information.

“It’s not going to happen overnight, so they have this opportunity now to reflect and get themselves ready for the big second half of the season.

“Our mindset has to be coming back in the New Year ready to fight and put the foot down on the gas. We have got to go into every game with the belief that we can get a result. I feel like the spirit of the group is good and they will be ready to go again in the New Year.”
